CHOCOLATE AND POWER TOOLS – Vic Winter, Jennifer Joyce, Angel

ISBN: (none included)

February 2007

Erotic Gay Romance Anthology

RRTE Rating: Missionary

So what do chocolate and power tools have in common?  Not much really, until three of Torquere Press' authors come up with a trio of intriguing novellas that run the gamut from sweetly passionate to decadently kinky.   In YOU DON'T BRING ME CHOCOLATES by Vic Winter, Dylan has learned to accept that his lover Eric disappears each Valentine's Day.  However after ten years together, Dylan decides he needs to know the truth for good and bad.   Luckily for Dylan, it's so good…it's magical.  Meanwhile, Jennifer Joyce perfectly blends the two themes in LAYING PLANS as Terry plans the perfect Valentine's Day for his partner, Bex.   Using his new power drill, Terry installs some bolts in their decadent bed setting the stage for a little holiday bondage.  Is there anything sexier than biting into a chocolate's liquid center and dripping it on your bound lover?   Yum!  Lastly, Angel's STOLEN CHOCOLATE TASTES SWEETEST reunites a professor with a former student whose career path has turned larcenous.   Taking Rafael back to his home, Damian does his best to steer him back to the (not so) straight and narrow.  Featuring an original way to use a mixer's beater attachment, this squirm inducing tale didn't do anything for me.

If life is like a box of chocolates, then this Torquere Press anthology is a mixed bag of nuts.

Present Day

Ad: 2 GWM, drug-disease free, looking for third GM for friendship, companionship, possibly more, no mind games, no bs.

This ad caught Kell’s eye while he was reading an underground newspaper. What kind of couple would seek out a third person to bring into their relationship? Is it all about sex or is it about something more? However, Kell’s interest is professional and not personal. Kell is a freelance writer; approached by a gay magazine he has worked for in the past to do a piece on the swinging scene. Kell instead opts to do an interview with Ricky and Justin, the couple who placed the ad.

When Kell finally meets them they are not at all what he expected; Justin is a carpenter and Ricky is a scholar, both are normal and obviously very much in love. What is even more unexpected is Kell attraction to both of them. When Ricky heard Kell’s voice on his and Justin’s voice mail, he knew that Kell was the one they were seeking. Ricky had hoped that Kell being a freelance writer and wanting to interview them was a lie, just in case he was not interested in him and Justin, and needed an out. Yet upon meeting him, Ricky realizes that Kell is just a freelance writer. Disappointed but not willing to give up so easily, Ricky and Justin invites Kell to dinner.

COUPLE SEEKS FRIENDSHIP is a well-written tale that is both sexy and smart. All the stereotypes one may have about couples advertising for partners in the newspaper are address here, and Kell harbors many of them. Inspite of himself, Kell is drawn into the love and warmth Ricky and Justin feel for each other, but will it last? With all that going for it, plus some sizzling sex, I recommend stopping by Torquere Press and picking up a copy of COUPLE SEEKS FRIENDSHIP by Rob Knight.

The ultimate sex toy, there can be no mistaking what a dildo is used for and three of Torquere Press' most popular authors give us three steamy encounters to enjoy.   In Sean Michael's Playing for Keeps, Kody's in a snit so Sam turns on the big guns guaranteed to start his lover's engines – a little bondage, a little domination and a spanking new dildo.   Meanwhile, BA Tortuga gives us A Dark and Stormy Night with Galen giving his lover Shane a new motorcycle.   Other people might break a Harley in by going for a drive, these two do it by having wild, raunchy sex on the bike in the pouring rain with a little help from a dildo Galen happens to have handy.   Finally, Julia Talbot takes us back to a simpler time in Jade and Copper where lovers Daniel and Michael enjoy some sport in their copper tub with Michael's latest gift – a dildo carved from jade.   Hot and unabashedly wicked fun prevails in this very naughty short story anthology from Torquere Press.  A nibble not to be missed!

February 2007

Erotic Anthology Gay Contemporary Romance

RRTE Rating: Multiple O's

A feather can be very useful in the games that lovers like to play.  In Feathers for Ed by Vic Winter, a man uses his lover's body as his canvas.  With edible ink and a quill, he writes the story of their courtship in titillating detail.   Meanwhile, Drew Zachary's The Feather Duster has lovers Sam and Robert finding lots of fun and interesting uses for a feather plucked from their new duster.   Lastly, Chris Owen's Light Touch brings back cowboys Jake and Tor from BAREBACK and NATURAL DISASTER.  Tor is usually the one who likes to find the toys but this time Jake's got a tip from a pal.   Peacock feather in hand, he waits for the right moment to pounce on Tor and the result is a steamy, tender encounter.

Three different feathers, three different pairs of lovers – all guaranteed to raise your temperature and give you a naughty idea or three!   I highly recommend this sensuous nibble.

FOREST OVER STONE - Vic Winter

Erotic Romance-Nibble

Someplace in a Forest

Andreas lives in a monastery, brought there as a child when his parents died. Besides a few other servants, Andreas has no friends. One Sunday morning, Andreas hears a voice, he looks around, but sees nothing. Andreas is sure that it can’t be any of the monks because they have taken a vow of silence on this day. Then Andreas hears the voice again, but again sees no one. Although, Andreas wants to ask the other servants if they have ever heard such a voice, he decides to say nothing, thinking he might get in trouble. That afternoon, Andreas is given permission to go to the forest and pick berries. It is a blissful afternoon, but when Andreas is heading back to the monastery he sees a man in the distance. Could this man be connected to the voice Andreas heard earlier in the day?

FOREST OVER STONE, I assume, is a metaphor for freedom, which the forest represents, triumphing over oppression, which is represented by the stone building that houses the monks. The best part of the story are the descriptions of the forest, they are vivid, sensual, and sumptuous, a perfect contrast to the cold and confining walls of the monastery that Andreas longs to escape from.

FOREST OVER STONE is a well-written short story that tends to skim too much over some very important details. For example, I was never sure how old Andreas was, and there was never a detailed explanation on exactly who, once revealed, the man is that Andreas sees in the woods; then there are the magical abilities the he and Andreas are capable of exhibiting. Also, readers should be warned, there is some sexual abuse involving Andreas at the hands of the monks. As a result of this, I believe readers may feel less satisfied after finishing FOREST OVER STONE, then Mr. Winter intended.

GHOSTS - Olivia Lorenz

February 2007

Erotic Gay Historical Romance

RRTE Rating: Le Petite Mort

Peking and Shanghai, China-19th century

"We are perfect together, I cannot share my heart and you have no heart to give. And we both lie to ourselves and to one another."

Hua Ma Yun is sent to Peking, China on business for his uncle, which includes killing everyone inside an Opium den owned by his uncle’s business rival. Ma Yun feels disconnected from his life and his job, scarred from a trauma that happened in the war, he does not want to be a leader anymore, only a follower. At the drug den, Ma Yun and his men check to make sure that no one has been left alive. When they discover a man in the back room of the Opium den, Ma Yun is ready to kill him without a thought when one of his men, Nian, recognizes him as Leng Ruo Fei, the great opera singer, and stops him. Nian thinks that killing him would be a bad idea, it will only bring more police after them, and besides he is a big fan of Leng Ruo Fei. Ma Yun decides not to kill Leng Ruo Fei but not for the reasons Nian might think. When Mu Yu tells his uncle about the incident, he is ordered to silence Ruo Fei. Will Mu Yu kill Ruo Fei or find another way to keep him quiet?

GHOSTS is full of symbolism and two characters who do not have a chance in hell of living "happily ever after." Like a good film noir, you can’t help watching even though you know that everybody is doomed. Mu Yun is stoic and refuses to let what he does touch him, literally. He surprises himself when he feels an attraction for another man, not to mention an opera singer. Ruo Fei is delicate and beautiful almost like a woman and lives only to perform on stage, but is determined to destroy himself in his "real" life. GHOSTS is definitely not for everyone, but kudos to Olivia Lorenz for coming up with a completely original, multi-layered, beautifully crafted love story, and in my opinion, rises to the level of art. Check out GHOSTS at Torquere Press, it is well worth it.

HANDCUFFS – Jodi Payne and Chris Owen, James Buchanan, Lorne Rodman

Toy Box

ISBN: (none included)

April 2007

Erotic Gay Contemporary Romance

RRTE Rating: Multiple O's

There's something innately disturbing yet sexy about a pair of handcuffs.  Take it away from the scene of a crime and stick it in a bedroom with a pair (or more) of lovers and one's imagination can easily be carried away.   After all, what's hotter than having your lover restrained and helpless at your mercy?  Several of Torquere Press' authors have fun conjuring up some imaginative scenarios.   In RATCHET by Jodi Payne and Chris Owen, cop Noah is surprised to find his lover and master, Tobias, waiting for him in his apartment.  When Tobias snags his cuffs, the fun truly begins.

Meanwhile, in James Buchanan's TECHNIQUE, Nick is trying to remove all breakables and hide the adult toys before the horde (masquerading as children) that he's agreed to babysit arrives.   When his lover Brandon, who happens to be a badass cop, finds and mocks Nick's pair of restraints, the two end up comparing their hardware…the hard way.

And last but not least, THE DARE by Lorne Rodman has sweet, shy Farley dared by Cody, the more outrageous of his twin lovers, to go into a sex shop and buy something.   Rattled by the dazzling assortment before him, Farley settles in the least intimidating item he can find – a pair of handcuffs.  With a little help from Farley's other lover, Chris, the tables (literally) get turned on naughty Cody when they handcuff him to one and make Cody watch them get it on.

Hot and fun, HANDCUFFS is the perfect nibble for a steamy summer night.

San Juan, Potosi-1935

Owner of a penny arcade, ex-mobster, and all around busybody, Ray has a lot on his plate. He should have known that his luck was in the toilet when his fortuneteller machine went haywire, and kept pointing to the hanged man card. He thought moving to San Jan, Potosi from Manhattan would make his troubles go away. Now, Charlie, an accountant and ex-Fed, walks back in his life. Is Charlie friend or foe?

HANGED MAN has a many unique elements; Ray has a problem with Master Alistair, a cult leader and drug trafficker who keeps bothering his middle age employees. Charlie, a pansy but never the less, a swell fellow is stirring up Ray’s libido and the past, and then there is the dance marathon at the Grand Palace. All these elements are well thought out, and come together at the end, resulting into a smart, funny, and satisfying conclusion.

The dialogue in HANGED MAN has zing, and a snappy quality found in a 1930’s detective movie or book. Charlie and Ray aren’t gay, at least not the way we think of a person being gay in 2007. They are ‘funny’ or ‘pansies’- their words- and have an old-fashion masculine quality like Humphrey Bogart, which makes their intimate moments more real than titillating. HANGED MAN is a real treat, which readers might find themselves rereading just to get all the wise cracks and subtle moments within the story.

King Gaspar’s Kingdom

King Gaspar is a man of learning and believes strongly in logic.  It pains him that the people of his kingdom are still steeped in superstitious beliefs.  He wants to wipe those ideas completely from his subject’s minds.  A belief that still lingers in the minds of his subjects has to do with the coming harvest and the start of the harsh winter.  King Gaspar decides that instead having the peasants do their hard backbreaking labor as they usually do this time of year, he will throw a three-day ball, which will be open to both peasants and the nobility.  King Gaspar then decides to kill two birds with one stone and use the ball to find his two sons wives.

King Gaspar son’s Neville, the oldest, and Sylvain are very different but close.  Both have no interest in marrying.  Neville because his is not yet ready and Sylvain because he prefers men, something he goes to great lengths to hide from his family.  Sylvain is so happy that he is the second born son because, unlike his brother, he can put off marrying.  Sylvain is dreading the three-day ball but all that changes when he meets a beautiful but strange young man.  However it is not just the man that is strange.  Sylvain can’t quite put his finger on it, but there is something odd about the whole ball.

OPULENCE AT MIDNIGHT is a sexy and suspenseful story, which has an underlying creepiness to it that becomes more present as the story progresses.  Full of stark imagery and themes involving superstition versus reason and self-sacrifice, it builds effectively to an ending that is so beautifully described that readers will be moved as well as a little frightened.  It reminded me one of Edith Wharton’s ghosts stories.  For a lovely and interesting story, check out OPULENCE AT MIDNIGHT.

PLUGS – Julia Talbot, Mike Shade, Rob Knight

Toy Box

ISBN: (none included)

April 2007

Erotic Gay Romance Anthology

RRTE Rating: Multiple O's

One glance at its tapered wand and solid base, and it's clear to see why plugs are such a favorite toy.  Used by both sexes, this unabashedly sexual item is especially enjoyed by men as illustrated by this trio of tales from Torquere Press.  In Julia Talbot's THE SPICE OF LIFE, Brian brings home a new toy for his lover Colin.   Unfortunately, Col's the manliest gay guy around and absolutely refuses to have anything to do with Brian's gaudy, jewel tipped plug.  Finally giving up on his lover, Brian can't bring himself to throw the plug away and decides to give it a try.   A truly lusty, fun tale.

Mike Shade's SONG AND SCULPTURE has artist Richard soothing his frustrated lover, Dave, who's having problem with his latest song.   A hot shower and some loving will set Dave to rights, along with the very special plug that Richie has crafted for his man.  Softly sensual, this story has a dreamy quality to it.

Rounding off this latest Toy Box anthology is PERFORMANCE ART by Rob Knight.   There's something unusual and arousing about Thom's latest gig.  Once a month for the last three months, Thom has come to a fancy building complete with its own home theater.   Alone on that stage, Thom acts out sexual fantasies by himself, unsure if he has an audience or not.  But this time, Thom can feel someone watching and decides to give his mystery viewer a show to remember.   This one is pure luscious fantasy.

In your face and absolutely delicious, this anthology is an excellent addition to the Toy Box series.

London, England, Devon, and Canada- Present Day

No Sir

Ryan plays on an amateur Rugby Team and when he is introduced to a fellow player’s cousin, Hugh, he becomes immediately smitten. But there is more to Hugh than meets the eye. A story about a relationship that is on the cusp of beginning and what it takes to build up trust.

Sea Changes

Brian takes his lover, Cal, to the English countryside for a Holiday. He and Cal are polar opposite; will this holiday prove that they are meant to be together? One of the most intriguing stories in the collection. Sea Changes, the title of the story, has more than one meaning and readers will be surprised where this story will take them.

O’Night More Lovely Than the Dawn

Ludo's lover, Nyle, is dying. Is there a way for them to be together even after death? A tale of love, faith and magic. The title, taken from a St. John the Cross poem, figures strongly in this story.

The stories in PUT SOME ENGLISH ON IT are more literary, than genre romance, and deal with the romantic entanglements of three couples at the beginning, middle, and end of their relationships. All the stories are told in first person, and are very subtle. Readers are thrust right in the middle of these character's relationships and lives, and as a result might, at first, feel a little lost and find themselves, like this reviewer, reading the stories twice. But patience is the key; PUT SOME ENGLISH ON IT is heavy on dialogue, wry humor, interesting premises and characters; this collection of short stories is worth a look.

The Desert

Feyer became a body slave at a young age. He is used to being the most beautiful, pampered, and adored, but all that changes when his old Raya, master, dies and he is sold to a new one. Feyer’s new Raya, Amut, is unlike any master that Feyer has ever had. Feyer’s pouting and temper tantrums do not get him the desired results he hoped for with Amut, but punishment. Feyer has been dropped into a whole new world with new laws and he must learn to adapt or perish. But can there be room for love between master and body slave in such a world?

SAND HEAT has Sean Michael’s trademark electric and sizzling love scenes and strong writing. The desert setting is lush. Fans of Sean Michael's writing style and plot ideas will not be disappointed. The story is broken up into small chapters- lessons that teach Feyer about what it means to be a good body slave to Amut. For new readers, this short hot story is a great introduction to Sean Michael’s writing techniques. Feyer and Amut are not characters that are as fully developed as one might have liked, but readers will still get a sense of them as something other than just sexual objects.

Clint has been on the run for three weeks, before landing in Mexico. Or more precisely, in Mexico, on a barstool, in a bar named the Drunken Pelican. Low on money, in trouble with the law and scared out of his mind, Clint is shocked, thankful and surprised by the kindness of the bar’s owner, Jack, who offers him a job and a place to stay. Jack is in trouble with the law himself, which is he why he has been residing in Mexico for some-odd years. He figures he will pay it forward, he was helped once and now he will help this young man. And although, Jack is attracted to Clint, he looks too young for him, so Clint figures hands off. But when he finds out that Clint is older than he looks and prefers men to women, all bets are off.

SEASHORES OF OLD MEXICO rocks. Full of smart, well-crafted dialogue that tells you everything you need to know about these characters. From Clint's slow, southern, mannered quips, to Jack's "Honeys" and "Tuckered outs," readers will be instantly taken with these two characters. Clint and Jack ignite the pages with poignancy and passion. Clint finds an unexpected home in Mexico, and Jack wonders if he is not too old after all to feel more than a passing fancy. Take a trip to the SEASHORES OF OLD MEXICO, you won’t regret it.

Now that they've exchanged vows of commitment with each other, Daniel and Rack are now off on their honeymoon…sort of.   Actually, it's a six week tattoo and body art convention traveling through major cities with Rack as one of the featured artists and Daniel hiring out as a tour carpenter.  First stop is New York City where Rack is in his element and Daniel is soaking it all in.  Daniel's even made a new friend, Josh, a painfully shy young man just back from a tour in Iraq working as a convention gofer.  Unfortunately, it was too good to last.  Several of Daniel's fellow carpenters turn out to be a bunch of jealous bigots and when Daniel confronts them after hearing some of their nasty talk, things quickly get out of hand with Daniel soon out of a job.   But Rack's not about to let that ruin their honeymoon and has an idea or two that might do the trick.  Quick and satisfying, this nibble hits the spot.

I've been a fan of Rack and Daniel's since the very beginning and if you've never read them, I dare you to give them a try and you too might just have a new favorite odd couple.

Bride Island off the Coast of Scotland

After serving in the British Army during the Boer Wars in Africa, Sebastian returns to England to find his mother dead, his father a drunken sot and people in general hard to be near.  Sebastian goes to Bride Island -- a deserted island off the coast of Scotland to try to come to terms with the horrors he’s witnessed and decide what to do with his life.  A harsh barren place, Bride Island seems an unlikely refuge, but for a man who cannot abide the company of others it seems perfect.  From the moment of his arrival, Sebastian feels he is not alone.  He is haunted by erotic dreams of a god and a people who cannot exist.  Will Bride Island prove Sebastian’s salvation or will he lose his grasp on reality completely?

Once again Ms. Okati has created a novel that is so different and compelling the reader will be unable to put it down. However, at the end some readers will be left profoundly moved … others profoundly disturbed.  The multiple O’s rating I’ve given this short story doesn’t speak to the heat factor of the novel but to the absolutely compelling story-telling and unusual end.  To find out if Sebastian gets the salvation he seeks or is simply pulled into a different kind of hell you’ll have to read THE TEMPTATION OF SEBASTIAN.

New Mexico- Present Day

John Miller moved to New Mexico to be alone, but for is daughter, the only one left out of his three children who still talks to him, he would be. Lisa, John’s daughter, is always trying to save people and now it seems she has focused his sights on him. John is HIV positive and he knows that he can’t be saved, and he is not sure he wants to be. Lisa is in graduate school, studying to be a wildlife biologist. John gets a call from Lisa’s professor, Nathaniel Briggs. He tells John, he thinks Lisa went out on her own to track some  wolves, a potentially dangerous situation. Where Lisa went is located near where John lives and Nathaniel is headed out to find her. Understandably, John wants to join him in the search for his daughter and tells Nathaniel to pick him up at his home. After they meet, Nathaniel admits to John that Lisa has told him everything about him, including that fact that John is HIV positive.

WOLF is a high-quality and well- written story and a HIV positive main character is a heavy subject to tackle. John’s behavior has made him a piranha to his ex-wife, two other children, and friends, as a result readers will have mix feelings about him. Then there is Nathaniel, who has his own issues to deal with, and the wolves Lisa is trying to save. WOLF deals with dying, love, second chances and relationships between children and parents. I think with the subject matter, it would have been worth while to make the story longer. WOLF is not a light-hearted, contemporary romance and not one so easily categorize, but with tightly drawn characters, it makes it well worth reading. UNDER ARREST – Vincent Diamond, CB Potts, James Buchanan

ISBN: (none included)

March 2007

Erotic Gay Contemporary Romance

RRTE Rating: Foreplay

Three of Torquere Press' authors have come up with an anthology featuring lawmen, and the stories range from bittersweet to raunchy fun.   In Vincent Diamond's A COLD NIGHT'S SLEEP, former cop Sandy has hidden himself in the woods nursing the wounds that ended his career.  When a stranger gets stranded with him in the middle of a storm, Sandy finally finds healing in the stranger's arms.  CB Potts' SMALL TOWN LAWMEN drops us in the middle of Sheriff Win Hamill's complicated life – an ornery grandmother, a drug trafficking situation and the gorgeous DEA agent whose pants he's dying to get into.   And lastly, PAT DOWN by James Buchanan has local bad boy Jeff reuniting with his high school crush.  Unfortunately, Chris is now a State Patrol officer and about to arrest Jeff for being drunk and disorderly.   Things take an interesting turn, however, when Jeff tries to run and Chris gets him to assume the position.

While these stories had their moments, as a whole this anthology just didn't do it for me.
