US – Present Day
Marianne Donovan, also known as Maura Donner, best-selling author of
regency romance novels, is plagued by dreams and nightmares. Each
night she dreams of a man named Christian Lawrence. In her dreams
she knows she loves him passionately and that they are soul mates,
but each night the dream ends the same – with the death of Christian
and Marianne sobbing in grief and the sound of a nightingales
singing in the darkness. How can she possibly be having these
vivid dreams that seem more like memories about a man and time that
are long in the past?
Driven
by desperation, Marianne contacts a dream therapist. Marianne
visits Jake Corvo and his wife Renny at their country estate hoping
their unusual therapy can help her. After telling Renny and Jake
about her dream they agree to try and help, and Marianne makes
arrangements to return for a longer visit.
California – Present Day
Chris
Harvey, a symphony conductor and composer, wakes from an erotic
dream about a woman he's never met. But what's even more unusual is
that the dream took place in medieval times and he was a knight.
While the dream bothers him because of the way it ends, he is
inspired to add a section to the symphony he's writing.
As
Marianne works through her dreams with Jake and Renny, she finally
learns why she is left with unrelenting grief. But will this be
enough to end her nightly torment? And what about a composer
thousands of miles away who is having dreams about a woman who looks
suspiciously like Marianne?
A WATCH
OF NIGHTINGALES is a splendid romance and hits all the right notes
for a truly thrilling read. Marianne's dreams, the erotic and the
tragic, pull the reader in and the detailed writing makes all of
Marianne's emotions easy to identify with. From the elation and
passion she feels in Christian's arms to the horror and heartbreak
she lives nightly at his death, the reader is immersed in Marianne's
feelings. Jake and Renny are well developed and likable secondary
characters, and I suspect their story, AN UNKINDESS OF RAVENS is
just as well written and emotionally gripping as A WATCH OF
NIGHTINGALES. Chris Harvey is less well defined than the other
characters, and even his counterpart in the past has more "on
screen" time, though I must admit, I loved him at the end of the
book. Smooth, skilled writing and a vividly descriptive narrative
take A WATCH OF NIGHTINGALES from a good read to a great read.
Passionate, heartbreaking and romantic, A WATCH OF NIGHTINGALES
blends eroticism and romance into a story that will stay with you
long after the last page is read. I highly recommend it.
