Erotic Paranormal Romance - Short Story

The Highlands, north of both the City of the Damned and Dome City - The Future

The ancient Dragul race who recently emerged from their refuge beneath the earth to once again make their home aboveground, have finally admitted that their new neighbors, the City (City of the Damned) and the Dome (Dome City) must be dealt with. Peace between all three groups would be for the best, so King Vasil invites delegates from both the City and the Dome to a conference where the future can be discussed.

Eve, a mutant who lives in the Dome, is heading up their delegation. She was born and raised in the City and knows that not only do her own team members not trust her (due to her City birth and mutant status), the delegation from the City views her as a rebel. But Eve has a vision for the future and she’ll use whatever weapons she possesses: strength, beauty, and if necessary, sex, to convince King Vasil that she’s right.

Poor Eve, she has no idea who she’s messing with. King Vasil is no fool, and he’s more than prepared to take her on, in any arena.

Eve is a proud woman, a werewolf and one of the strongest telepaths the City has ever known, and her ego gets quite a bruise when Vasil reveals how easily he can read her thoughts. Despite this, Eve is more than happy to explore the passion that erupts between her and Vasil. However, he’s holding a large part of himself back and Eve’s pride won’t allow her to be rejected by yet another man (her former lover is now mated to one of the Dragul). Vasil once allowed his passions free rein, but in doing so, he betrayed a dear friend and caused the death of a loyal subject. Ever since that awful time, he’s vowed to never again allow himself to feel the ultimate satisfaction of passion unleashed. But Eve is hard to resist, and if only his visions would show him the future clearly enough to decide what to do. If his instincts are true, she may very well be his One (soul mate), but can Vasil keep her around long enough to find out?

Many of the characters from the first two books in the Dragul Rising series have important roles in this book as well: Aurel, the Keeper of the Dragul Laws, and his One, Beth (Eve’s friend and fellow mutant) from DRAGUL DAWN (April 2007); Eve’s former lover and fellow mutant Michael, and his One, the Dragon Dancer Danna from DRAGUL IN DAYLIGHT (June 2007); even Avram, the Dragul who once tried to eliminate Beth, makes an appearance, a man with a supposedly legitimate reason for visiting Vasil, he also has a hidden agenda.

Though DRAGUL IN DARKNESS is the third in the Dragul Rising series, its origins begin in Marie Treanor’s  City of the Damned series. The author has done a wonderful job of looking ahead and building on each story she writes. Though the stories are short, readers develop a real relationship with the characters, making each book something to be looked forward to with delight. I sincerely hope that Ms. Treanor isn’t done with these characters yet, and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for any future books. Stop by Changeling Press and get your copy of DRAGUL IN DARKNESS. And while you’re there, if you haven’t read the rest of the Dragul Rising or City of the Damned books, get them too, they’re all winners.
