Paranormal Romance – Short Story
Las Vegas
and an Island near Crete - Present Day
When a Siren
says a man looks good enough to eat, he should generally be making
tracks for the nearest exit if he wants to live to see another day.
A woman whose true form has an eagle's head with several rows of
very sharp teeth should be watched carefully. However, Chloe
Sirenea is being watched for a very different reason. Her beauty is
such that when she goes out among humans, she has to literally beat
the men, or the occasional lesbian, off with a stick. Then she sees
the golden Adonis leaning against the wall in the hotel lobby. This
time, Chloe is the one who's drooling.
Alexius, an
operative with Sundown International, has been sent to determine
what kind of supernatural Chloe is as his newest assignment. Still,
when the lady makes an overture, he has no compunction about taking
her up on her invitation. But will learning Chloe's true nature
send Alexius running?
Great
characterization creates an entertaining romp in Cat Marsters'
MANEATER. Chloe is a siren and, by definition, a man eater. She's
not proud of it, but hey, a girl's got to eat. Still, Chloe is
hoping to take a mini-break from her family and their Greek island
by visiting Las Vegas, so she's got to rein in her more animalistic
tendencies. Unfortunately, that's shot to pieces as soon as she
sees the scrumptious Alexius who is beautiful enough to make the
angels weep. But unintended betrayals will get between the two
lovers and Chloe will have to decide if Alexius is good enough to
keep...or eat.
There are
several secondary characters, including an elf, faeries, a vampire,
and a werewolf who add a bit of background and comic relief to the
tale, but the story revolves around Chloe and Alexius. Readers
looking for the standard romance should be prepared as the
hero/heroine enjoy themselves with multiple partners and there is
also some homosexuality involved. Not generally my cup of tea, but
brought off surprisingly well enough that I didn't mind.
If there is one
thing to say about Cat Marsters it's that her tales are never
predictable. But they are enchanting, engaging, and entertaining
and MANEATER is no different.
