To fight the
wars, work in unsafe conditions and serve in any way required,
vampires with white-blond hair and electric blue eyes were
bio-engineered. To keep these perfect servants in subjugation they
are fed an enzyme --- necessary for their very existence --- which
is altered to further control them. But, anytime a creation is given
fangs that creation may eventually rebel and turn on its masters.
There are two levels of the city: tall spires connected by lacy
spider works of sky bridges where the prosperous ones of society
live and work and the ground level...
Dawn Eindhoven
is an executive assistant. She is late, and in order to get home she
must traverse a route on the ground level. The last person she
expected to meet was Helios, the first of the vampires out of the
test tube --- two hundred years ago. Helios knows Dawn. The company
she works for manufactures an element of the enzyme needed to keep
the vampires alive, an element that could free his kind. He means to
force her to give him the codes to her company's labs, but after
meeting and spending time with her he finds that he wants more from
her and cannot go through the last part of his plan, which is to
kill her.
His decision to
keep her alive and for himself, is not popular with his friends the
other vampires and human allies who have joined him in revolt. Dawn,
who has never had sympathy for the vampires, learns many things she
did not know and finds herself wanting to help Helios.
DAMNATION is a
tense thriller. In a world of fear, torture, brutal inequality and
bleakness, tiny sparks of hope and love take root in Helios and
Dawn. Will their efforts free the vampires from slavery? Or will
they all perish in the fight to secure freedom? The writing is
tight, gritty, biting and describes a most untenable have and
shadowy have-not society. Nathalie Gray is a master of suspense and
wild, steamy lovemaking. DAMNATION is not an easy concept to accept
and it is yet another example of why man should not play God. It
will make a reader think about it long after the last page has been
turned. I recommended it.
