Present Day

Maura Wagner has had it with her mate, Pete.  She's tired of being embarrassed about his infidelities and abuse and, even worse, that their Pack Alpha won't dissolve the mating.  So when Pete drags her into his car and drops her in the middle of nowhere, Maura takes the opportunity to regain her freedom.

Josie Balzon heard her thoughts before he saw her.  One of the Malta werewolves blessed with magical gifts, Josie can hear the thoughts of anyone around him.  He uses that gift to track down the gentle murmuring he can hear in his head.  Josie hasn't seen Maura in months, but he hasn't forgotten her.  When he learns of her mate's actions, Josie wastes no time claiming Maura for himself.

But Pack law forbids killing a mated wolf (for his mate) without a public challenge.  Josie went with his heart first and now must face the consequences of his actions.  Pete's den now has the right of first blood where any male in that den can attack Josie, unmolested, one time.  Will Josie survive the fight?

Lorie O'Clare doesn't miss a step in FOR LIFE, the fifth book in the Werewolves of Malta series.  Josie Balzon is as darkly handsome and powerfully alpha male as the heroes in the other books, and Maura is his perfect match.  The tension between the Malta, American, and lunewulf werewolves ties the series together, and readers will immediately get the sense that one match is all it will take to blow the situation into something dangerous.  Maura leaving the lunewulf pack to mate with Josie is just one more log on the fire that simmers beneath the surface.
