IN THE DARK is a series of vignettes in the life of
the vampire Georges Bellveau. In Black, Georges discovers that
sometimes humans can be more evil than the monster that lives inside
him when he confronts a group of drug enhanced thugs who thrive on
violence and the degradation of white women. In The Abyss, Georges
is a college professor. One of his students is a problem and
receives a failing mark -- Georges soon learns that Mandy is much
more than a poor student and she could prove to be deadly. Georges
also meets a woman, Diane Patterson, who touches his emotions in a
way no one has in a hundred years. But when Georges' war with Mandy
adversely affects Diane, he knows he must leave Diane to protect her
from the darkness that is drawn to him. Embrace picks up one year
after Georges left Diane and his non-beating heart aches for her.
Georges invites Diane to come to him in Paris -- where he plans to
tell her all and ask her to join him in the darkness. You Can't Go
Home Again is the last story in the anthology, and to tell you
anything about it would spoil the book, however, it's a good story,
and the ends suits the anthology perfectly.
I've given a brief description of the stories within
IN THE DARK but I need to mention a few other things. The first
person narrative in the beginning is a bit tedious, and I was a bit
annoyed that we are not given a name for the main protagonist
telling the tale in the first story. The sex contained in IN THE
DARK runs the gamut from violent, to passionate, and multiple
partners to same sex scenes. A word of caution -- the violence in
the second story is sexual in nature and extremely graphic -- those
who are squeamish may want to skip that part of the anthology.
Overall, IN THE DARK is a fascinating book and is well written. Fans
of paranormal romance that borders on horror are sure to enjoy it.
