Exasla Territory, The Citadel and Other Places - Somewhen

Shapeshifters called Reapers keep the peace. They answer only to the Shadowlords and the Goddess Morrigunia. She had chosen each one and removed them from Terra before the Great War. Mankind was almost destroyed when aliens called Ceannus left little nasties that were deadly to humans.

Arawn Gehdrin, the Prime Reaper, has taken a wife, Danielle Brewster. They are blissfully in love and are not shy in expressing that love. But, honeymoons cannot last. Arawn and his fellow Reapers, Cynyr Cree and Bevyn Coure, are called to the Citadel, Shadowlord Headquarters. Along with Danielle; Cynyr's wife, Aingeal; and Bevyn's lady, Lea Walsh accompany them. The four other Reapers of Arawn's team have also been summoned.

Lord Kheelan Ben-Alkazar is the High Lord, High Commissioner of the Shadowlords. The last man to be called into the High Council meeting is Kasid Jaborn. Aingeal and Cynyr have reason to hate him, but a grave problem has arisen, and Lord Kheelan gives orders that animosity will cease. The Ceannus have returned to complete mankind's annihilation. They are holding children as hostages: sons of Morrigunia.

There are many twists and surprises in this tense, cohesive, character-driven story. Charlotte Boyett-Compo grabs her readers by the throat and doesn't let go until the final page. Each character is well-drawn and believable. Elements of suspense and magic twine to create an intriguing tale of love and all its facets. Now I have to go find the first two in the series. I recommend PRIME REAPER.
