Hallie Clearwater, a CHIP---Cellular enHanced robotIc Person---has permission from Governor Gavin Rockford to free prisoner, Daniel Highcliff.  She needs his  help in her search for the person responsible for an explosion that caused extensive damage and killed her brother, Jason.   When she arrives at the prison, she is appalled at Daniel’s condition.  What did he do to merit such treatment?

The Pure Human Faction is intent on establishing biological purity.  Hallie, whose implanted nanotechnology has made her almost superhuman, is aware of this, and knowing that her kind is resented and distrusted, ventures into the PHF location with Daniel to collect his back pay from Eric Smith who was once his boss.  All does not go well.

As Daniel and Hallie come to terms with their attraction for each other, they must also deal with the problems surrounding them.  Hallie’s respect for Daniel grows as she learns more and more about his past and he, in turn, learns to see beyond her tough façade.  But, Daniel doesn’t tell Hallie everything.  Will she stay with him when she knows the whole truth?  And, when Daniel finally knows the full truth about his father, Theodore Highcliff, will he let Hallie help him? 

Secondary characters--- Carl, MacGregor, Drina Scott, Spender, Patirica, Dryer and Quint---may or may not be friends.  In this story of survival, two opposites throw in their lots with each other to ensure that civilization, as they know it, will not be eradicated.  There are several surprises in DESPERATE ALLIANCE.  Robie Madison has built a world of mistrust and deceit, hope and discovery.  Life is not easy and I felt like I was there.  I like this one very much and recommend it.
