Delta Colony - 1207 D. F.

Delta Colony is a series of domed biospheres. The inhospitable, barren land was terraformed so refugees from Earth could start over. In this place, only women are considered human. Men, who were blamed for all the devastation of Earth, have been reduced to animal status, living in enclosed parks, and are called Stallions.

Dorothea, daughter of Akiza and Eleanor, is bright and inquisitive. She also has yet to choose a mate, something her mothers and friends would like to help with. However, Dorothea is not yet ready to commit to just one woman. Her curiosity has often gotten her into trouble and her fascination with the Stallions may well be her downfall. She is particularly interested in one.

Colonel Mikhel Dorn is from Earth. Earth was not destroyed, just badly beaten, and in need of new blood. Mikhel has been ordered to infiltrate the Delta Colony in hopes of bringing back people to help rebuild the population of Earth. The best he can hope for is to find out how the scientists of Delta have assured procreation and take some of the Stallions back with him...if any of them are teachable. Then he sees Dorothea and keeping up his pretense of being a Delta Stallion is in jeopardy. How will Dorothea react when she discovers that Mikhel is a man, not a Stallion?

STALLIONS is a bleak, sterile view of civilization. On the surface, all appears well. Technology abounds, and women love, work, and die. But, all is not well. History has been distorted and a one-sex society will eventually collapse in on itself. Julian Masters has taken a familiar premise and has put enough of a twist on it to make the reader wonder if anyone will survive. There are many secondary characters. Inept Lieutenant Estaban Garron, the bane of Mikhel's existence, could get them both killed. The Guardian Mothers have had a stranglehold on the women of Delta, and an underground renewal movement of Goddess worshippers may subvert the entire colony. Livia Calun, Celia Frick, Jadrith, Trissia, Tori and others help add layers of suspense and danger. You might need a scorecard to keep up with everyone, but if you are in the mood for a puzzle and like futuristic love stories, I recommend STALLIONS.
