Manhattan - Present Day

Ten daughters from prominent families have been kidnapped by Al-Queda terrorists, and Daphne Urban and her vampire brethren have once again been called to action. But Team Darkwing has dwindled, due to death and betrayal, and now only three of the original members remain; Daphne, Benny and Cormac. They have no choice, though, since these terrorists hold so many lives at stake. They ask not only for diamonds, but an assault vehicle that could be used to take down any city in America. In order for the team to come out on top, they'll need some new blood -- literally. Can they recruit new vampires in time to save not only the missing women, but the country too?

But in order to find the vampires they need, Daphne will have to go into the secret underworld of her kind that she has shunned for so long. Though she longs for a normal life with her mortal boyfriend Fitz, the temptation to embrace her darker side may win out. Will Daphne be able to stay in control of her bloodthirsty desires? Or take a bite out of an apple that is just begging to be tasted?

A provocative and intense novel from author Savannah Russe, IN THE BLOOD is another fine addition to the Darkwing Chronicles. Even more dark and somber, Daphne and her fellow teammates have met their match with their latest mission, and it's anyone's guess as to who will come out on top. Besides the assignment, Daphne must deal with a personal life that isn't going as well as she would have liked. True, Fitz knows what she is, but Daphne is still unable to be herself around him, especially in bed. It's getting harder and harder to resist the deep-seated need to taste him, for fear that one bite might not be enough. And a new character, Rogue, may just be what Daphne needs to allow her the freedom to accept her darker nature. Even though IN THE BLOOD is told in first person, secondary characters provide plenty of atmosphere to the story, especially southern belle vampire Benny, who's always a treat.

IN THE BLOOD is a continuation of a series, so I recommend giving the first three a read before delving into this one. But for those familiar with the Darkwing Chronicles, Savannah Russe's latest is a great way to melt away the winter blues.
