Earth and Sandeflay - the Present

When she was twelve, Miranda Sayers and her mother had been run down by a reckless driver.  Challa Sayers died trying to protect her daughter, and Miranda had been paralyzed from the ribcage down.  With the help of her Grandmother May, Miranda has had an adequate existence.  But, now, May is in a nursing home, and Miranda is struggling to survive.  Her finances are slim, and worry about bills is always at the forefront of her thoughts.

One afternoon, a stuck wheelchair lift on the bus causes Miranda to fall out of her wheelchair, which also scatters her bags of groceries.  Collin First, who has an apartment in her building one floor up from hers, carefully picks her up and helps her get to her apartment without further incident.

Collin is an Extinguisher from the parallel world of Sandeflay.  On occasion, tunnel-like ducts open up between Earth and Sandeflay and deposit dangerous beasts called Lashers wherever it is opened.  Extinguishers are called to terminate and incinerate the vicious creatures.

Extinguishers are forbidden to fall in love with women from Earth.  But since when do hearts and attractions pay attention to the rules?  Collin realizes that he wants more than just to help Miranda.  Pity is not what he feels.  When Miranda can see his Tygren, a bear-like creature with stripes, even though the animal is invisible to everyone else, Collin has no idea what to make of Miranda.

A drug dealer, Victor Vicennes, drags Miranda into his quarrel with the man to whom he owes money.  He thinks that because she is handicapped, Miranda has no defense against him.  Collin shows him differently.

It is only when Collin decides to take Miranda to Sandeflay with him that things get tangled and danger threatens Miranda to the point that she could die.

Slowly, Miranda comes to understand that Collin doesn't see her as a cripple.  He sees her as a woman.  But, the truth is that no woman from Earth has ever been able to stay on Sandeflay.  Their bodies simply can't adjust to the differences.  So what will Collin and Miranda do when they have so little time together before she has to return to Earth and Collin is reassigned?

Marc, Collin's father, Dr. Tradi, Dr. Seegall, Dr. Mendall, and others on Sandeflay are among those who want to know more about Miranda…want to know more about why she can see things---like the lashers---that they can't.  And what secrets does Miranda's grandmother have that she has held for too long?

SANDEFLAY is an incredible adventure and love story.  What an imagination Linda Mooney has!  She uses such vivid descriptions that the reader has no trouble seeing the wonders of Sandeflay or the run-down conditions in which Miranda lived.  This book is long, but the trip though it leaves one breathless, and I was on the edge of my seat during a lot of it.  So much happens but I was sorry when it ended; I wanted more.  I heartily recommend SANDEFLAY.
