the Dark Queen, Ta’e and Somewhere else - Present day

It’s been several months now since Thea Auralel, along with many other human women, were brought aboard (sans their agreement) the Ta’e’shian ship, the Dark Queen, to become mates for crew members and passengers.  (A virus caused most Ta’e’shian women to lose their fertility and the human race was found to be compatible.) Two months ago, brutal attacks were made on several of the women (including Thea) that left them all nearly shattered in spirit and body, as well as causing Thea to lose her unborn baby. All of the women, and their mates, are trying to recover as they face the coming trial on Ta’e of Barik (the unbalanced man responsible).

The scars left on Thea and her husbands Kyrin and Daeshen are many but they’re trying to overcome recent events and reclaim the loving, trusting and passionate relationship they once had. Part of that recovery is moving on with their lives and planning their proposal to Sya’tia, a Warrior Chosen Ta’e’shian woman they have all come to love. But is Thea really ready to embrace another lover when she’s still so fragile in spirit?

Readers have been waiting on SHARDS OF THE MIND ever since the first book in The Ta’e’sha Chronicles was released in February 2007 and let me assure you that it was well worth the wait. Thea is as strong and determined as ever, even if she is understandably damaged by what Barik did to her. Kyrin is as aggressive and bold as ever, though he’s been tempered by his belief that he failed both his husband and his wife by failing to rescue Thea from Barik. Daeshen is his same sweet and sexy self, but he shares the same pain about what happened, as well as the holding the unwelcome knowledge that not everyone on Ta’e will welcome his bride and the other human women. Sya’tia’s strength and virtue became clear in the first book, as did her insecurities, because of her Warrior markings (her looks are looked down upon by many as primitive in her culture). Unfortunately, her perceived shortcomings will be pointed out more than once in this book. But love is a great reliever of burdens and Thea, Kyrin and Daeshen will do their best to make certain she knows she is perfect just the way she is. It’s not easy to create a pair of characters who seem as if they were born to be together, let alone four, but Theolyn Boese has done it.

Thea is a witch and in this book she’ll gain the support and friendship of fellow witches aboard the Dark Queen. Among them are Cristabel and Zinnia (lesbian lovers, you can imagine their new husband’s surprise) as well as Ruri, a witch with no apparent grasp of the concept of karma. Chief Medic Corvin is one of Thea’s friends as well as her doctor. He’s one smart cookie and it’s a mystery that some woman hasn’t snatched him up. All of Kyrin, Daeshen and Sya’tia’s families feature in this book and though most are great (how lucky Thea is to get such wonderful in-laws) there is among them at least one who could drive a good man to murder. Gods and Goddesses are children too you know, the Great One being their father. Let me tell you, you really don’t want to get on His bad side, and to be honest, His children aren’t any less scary when They’re angered. I’ve got to say one thing for Them though, They are creative! Just wait until you read about the efforts of the mischief making crew they set loose upon the Dark Queen to bring down the Ta’e’shian’s collective arrogance. I’ve got to say, there were definite moments I felt sorry for them (not that it wasn’t well deserved).

If you’re looking for fantastic world building, characters that leap from the pages, and a storyline that’s well developed, look no further. Get your copy of SHARDS OF THE MIND today. Oh, and if you haven’t read the first book in the series, DAUGHTERS OF TERRA, read it first. It sets up the whole series and will amplify your enjoyment.
