As an empathic psychiatrist, Dr. Miranda Kayten has helped many people through troubled times, but when one of her clients arrives with her husband’s wedding ring, it’s Miranda’s abilities as a Mystic that this woman needs.  While the psychic connection to the ring shows Miranda that her client isn’t as innocent as she seems, it also shows the woman’s lover to be a murderer – and sets off a reaction in Miranda’s mind that makes her believe that someone is trying to kill her.

Drake O’Bannon, an Enforcer with the Coalition Security Forces, has little regard for mystics, and scoffs at his partner’s belief in them.  Yet when he goes with Ritter to meet one of his informants, Drake’s surprised to find out that she is the well-known Dr. Miranda Kayten.  Even more surprising is the fact that he is attracted to her.  When she projects the images she got from the ring into Drake’s mind, he knows that Miranda is for real – and in real danger.  He and Ritter decide that the best way to protect Miranda is for her to “die”, and Drake will continue working with her to discover the meaning behind everything she’s seen.  Working with her while keeping his hands to himself will be a challenge though, especially when he learns that the easiest way for her psychic abilities to recharge is through sex.

A simple test to determine a husband’s infidelity becomes a life-or-death situation in MYSTIC.  Miranda and Drake are interesting characters, and they strike sparks off one another from their first meeting.  Drake is determined to be her protector only, but he hadn’t counted on her need for sex, or how strong the attraction between them is.  His prejudice against mystics dissolves pretty quickly in the face of Miranda’s abilities, and he’ll be in for a few more surprises as far as mystical abilities go.  Miranda is in for a few surprises herself and, with a little experimenting, gets a little more sexually adventurous than she had been before meeting Drake.

The suspense element is a bit understated, taking a backseat to the romance and sex, but is no less compelling.  While this is the fourth book in the Comet Coalition series, it focuses on Miranda and Drake, with only a few secondary characters, and can be read on its own.  An engaging story, check out MYSTIC.
