Earth, aboard a drak spaceship, Macedon and Kylo - The future

Out for her birthday with friends, Simone Beauchamp is as struck as every other woman in the bar by a trio of cowboys who saunter in. Tall, dark and handsome, she fantasizes about them a bit, but realizes that the chance they’d be interested in her is low. However, Simone couldn't be more wrong. The men do notice her, and they kidnap her the next day.

Camryn, Kael and Ean are members of the drak - a space-faring, highly militaristic society that places little value on women outside of their use as breeders and concubines. Unfortunately, those beliefs have led to their present situation, the possibility of the extinction of their people due to their insistence on strict population control and the high value placed on sons. Thus their mission on Earth is to collect women to use as breeders. Simone catches their eye with her spunk and the trio pick her to be the mother of their sons, an honor indeed (at least in their eyes) since Camryn is the prince heir of the House of Jakaar.

There’s just one thing that the drak trio didn’t count on, the independent spirit they so admire in Simone will lead her, and the rest of the women taken, to bring about change unlike any the drak empire has ever seen.

Although ALIEN PENETRATION can be a somewhat disturbing read given the subject matter (drak society is a strict class system - you’re born into your class and can never rise above it, and the women taken from Earth aren’t given a choice - some even leave behind husbands) the characters are interesting and so is the world Kaitlyn O’Connor has created for them. Simone is a bit of an unlikely heroine. Given to spouting whatever radical belief (and yes, some of them are, even to the other women from Earth) comes to her lips, her use of foul language is frequent and her temper leads her to do things that may not be in her best interests. However, Simone does have good qualities to balance the bad - an innate belief in the right of all beings to freedom, compassion, and the desire to love and be loved in return. While Camryn, Ean (brothers) and Kael (their cousin) are very similar, all warriors who are strong, brave and honorable, their attitudes (understandable though they are given their society) can really grate on your nerves. However, they are still men who feel emotions and have good senses of humor (hide them though they may). All four of these characters have a brusque outward appearance, but like the old saying goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Though focusing for the most part on Simone, Camryn, Kael and Ean, there are some secondary characters of import. Liz Carmichael is one of the women taken from Earth who becomes a friend to Simone. Akule is a drak man tasked with teaching the Earth women the rules of their new life, he’d also like to get a little closer to Simone. Zev is a young drak man of the worker class who desires to learn more about Earth. Lielani is the concubine of the House of Jakaar. She loves Camryn, Kael and Ean and has mixed feelings about the appearance of Simone in their lives. Arrek is Camryn and Ean’s father. A strict traditionalist, he wasn’t in favor of bringing humans to Macedon and his opinion doesn’t change when he meets Simone.

Though the pace of this book sometimes feels a bit too slow, it never becomes boring. The heat between the characters is undeniable, but if you’re looking for an erotic story chock full of sex, this isn’t it. However, if you’re interested in visions of futuristic societies and what would happen if a group of American women with our sometimes complacent expectations of equality (or as near as it gets anyway) find themselves in a place where there has never been such a thing, you’ll find this book to be of definite interest. Oh, this book also possesses one of the things I like best in a tale, an epilogue that gives you a glimpse into Simone, Camryn, Kael and Ean’s future. Riding off into the sunset is nice, but I always wonder what happens the next morning. :-) If you think what I’ve described sounds interesting, I urge you to stop by New Concepts and get a copy of ALIEN PENETRATION.
