"
Sixty years Bryan had owned the Baker's Dozen. Sixty years he'd been working his particular brand of magic into the confectionery, a concoction waiting to come together to be sold to exactly the right man."

Imagine biting into a luscious tart lime truffle or chocolate covered cherries, and with every bite a story unfolds.  A rotation of would-be, long time and estranged lovers make up BAKER'S DOZEN BITES OF MAGIC. Bryan is the owner of Baker's Dozen, a candy shop known for its unusual and expensive concoctions. By Bryan's side is James, his young apprentice, who learns that a combination of sweet, spice and everything nice is all that is needed to bring together two people who are meant for one another.

BAKER'S DOZEN BITES OF MAGIC are thirteen different stories- bite size, sensuous, and simply told. Memorable stories include a ménage a trios featuring a motorcycle gang; a fourth grade teacher and his estranged lover, and the jilted mechanic who has a secret admirer. Besides the lovers, there is a subplot involving Bryan. Who is Bryan? Is Bryan really using magic to create these tasty treats? If so, how? Bryan is a man who is coming to the end of his life and James is just starting out. All is not what it seems between the two, but it is not until the end of the story that James and Bryan's destinies are revealed.

Dallas Coleman manages to paint a portrait of each of her characters in just a few sentences. At times the writing is choppy, and transitions between sentences i.e., some characters emotions shift too quickly and therefore believability may be hard to sustain for the reader. However, while some of the stories can be categorized as biting off more than they can chew, in the end, BAKER'S DOZEN BITES OF MAGIC is a well put together group of stories and worth reading.
